WARRIORS TRADE VAN EXEL AWAY

The Golden State Warriors acquired forward/center Dale Davis and guard Dan Dickau from the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Nick Van Exel.

What does it give the Golden State Warriors
Veteran insurance in the post, and a back-up point guard who may surprise. The key here is the aged Davis, who can still provide rebounds and defense down low, and will be a good role model for State's young big men. He's a true professional and a hard worker, qualities the young and improving Warriors need in the leadership department. Dickau has some talent, but was probably included as a throw-in and will have a tough time stealing minutes for new point guard Derek Fisher and incumbent Speedy Claxton.

What does it give the Portland Trail Blazers
Veteran insurance at the point guard position. Damon Stoudamire streaky and rookie Sebastian Telfair is green, so Portland management likely wants "Nick the Quick" around to run the show if the other two falter. Not so quick anymore, Van Exel is coming off knee problems and a forgettable year in Golden State, so will want to prove himself. He's not the star he once was, but is the kind of clutch player who can carry a team in the playoffs.
