BLAZERS, CELTS ON THE MOVE
Portland Traid Blazers traded Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a 2nd round selection in 2008 to the Boston Celtics for Dan Dickau, Raef LaFrentz and the rights to Randy Foye.
What does it give the Boston Celtics
A new starting point guard who still may eventually be a star, and a very serviceable center. Telfair has been inconsistent since entering the NBA out of high school two years ago, but he still has elite quickness and talent despite his small size. Ratliff fell out of favor somewhat in Portland until a late surge last season, and he has the ability to battle for Boston's starting pivot job. Boston liked what Delonte West gave them from the point guard spot last year but he was somewhat out of position (and may now move to the 2-spot). The draft pick is just a way to offset the slight differences in perceived value of the players involved in the deal.
What does it give the Portland Trail Blazers
A player in Foye they eventually used to land Brandon Roy, the shooting guard they wanted. In addition they get LaFrentz and Dickau in the deal, two occasionally talented players who will likely be reserves for them. It's not certain whether they'll keep LaFrentz or Dickau over the long run, but Roy was the prize in this whole swap meet. He's a potential starter who may compete for Rookie of the Year honors. Portland obviously wasn't sold on the once-coveted Telfair, whom is still a guy with promise. They covered that loss with both Dickau and the eventual trade for rookie Sergio Rodriguez, so this was a nifty day of trading for the Blazers.
