BIBBY A HAWK
The Atlanta Hawks acquired point guard Mike Bibby from the Sacramento Kings for guards Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, forward Shelden Williams, center Lorenzen Wright and a 2008 second-round draft pick.
What does it give the Atlanta Hawks
In Bibby the Hawks get a savvy veteran playmaker who can help get them into the playoffs. Atlanta has a fine young group of athletic swingmen and forwards, but for several years has needed a top point guard to get the most out of them. Bibby remains an above-average distributor, and maybe this trade will rejuvenate him. It should definitely make the Hawks a better team and will help young PG Acie Law learn from a once-elite veteran.
What does it give the Sacramento Kings
For the Kings this deal seems mostly about rebuilding. The contracts of Johnson, Lue, and Wright expire after this season, which will free up almost $9.5 Million of cap space. That will help in either keeping their talented youngsters or in adding free agents. Meanwhile they add an intriguing possible cornerstone in Williams, who has the potential to be an above-average NBA center or power forward if he gets the playing time.
