TURKOGLU TO SUNS FOR TWO
The Phoenix Suns acquired forward Hedo Turkoglu from the Toronto Raptors for combo guard Leandro Barbosa and center Dwayne Jones.
What does it give the Phoenix Suns
With Amar'e Stoudemire now a Knick, the Suns are making some intriguing moves to fill the void. Turkoglu is big enough to play power forward, yet is also a nice fit for Phoenix's finesse-first, run-heavy style. He can play some point guard and shooting guard, and will help the Suns create mismatches against half-court teams. Expect him to start at small forward (with Grant Hill likely starting at power forward) in 2010-11. If he can get re-focused on basketball (which was a problem in his one Toronto season) Turkoglu could be a steal here for Phoenix.
What does it give the Toronto Raptors
Turkoglu was a bust on and off the court for the Raptors last season, and dumping his big contract is a nice long-term move for Toronto. Barbosa has only two years left on his contract (whereas Turkoglu has four left on his) and Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo is a big fan of Barbosa (having acquired him when Colangelo was in Phoenix). Barbosa will probably start at shooting guard for the Raps, but the fact he can also play point guard will help for a team in need of backcourt depth. Jones is a late-blooming center who dominated the D-league last season and could still become a solid NBA post player if he gets the minutes.
