ARMSTRONG TO DALLAS
The Dallas Mavericks acquired point guard Darrell Armstrong from the New Orleans Hornets for point guard Dan Dickau and a second-round draft pick in 2005.
What does it give the Dallas Mavericks
Yet another streaky veteran who can light it up. What distinguishes Armstrong from many of the current Mavs is he actually puts in a full effort on defense as well. He's perfect for the Dallas set-up because they're a deep team without much playing time to spare, and Armstrong is great in short spurts but wears down quickly. This is a nice pick-up for Dallas, as it bolsters their back-court defense and gives them yet another skilled veteran to help win this year.
What does it give the New Orleans Pelicans
A warm body to take up some cap room, and a dice-roll draft prospect. This move suggests the woeful Hornets are moving into rebuilding mode already, and while Dickau is still just 26 years old he doesn't seem to be a significant part of the Hornets' plans. Team management admitted they want to give young point guards Alex Garcia and Junior Harrington more playing time, and when star starter Baron Davis
returns from a bad back Dickau becomes the fourth option. In the short term, expect Harrington to be the big winner in the fallout of this deal.
