HAWKS GET WALKER, DELK

The Atlanta Hawks acquired forward Antoine Walker and guard Tony Delk from the Dallas Mavericks for guard Jason Terry, Alan Henderson and a future first-round draft selection.

What does it give the Atlanta Hawks
Yet another talented, versatile forward and a capable replacement in the backcourt. The Hawks certainly know what kind of player they want these days. By picking up the star-caliber Walker, they add their sixth versatile swingman of the off-season over 6-7. Walker will lead a young, hyper-athletic lineup featuring 6-9 Al Harrington, 6-8 rookie Josh Childress, 6-9 rook Josh Smith, 6-7 first-year Donta Smith, and 6-8 returnee Boris Diaw. Tony Delk isn't much of a downgrade from Terry, as both are sweet-shooting 2-guards in point-guard bodies. This is another great move by the Hawks -- all they need now is a center and someone to rein in Walker's wild shooting.

What does it give the Dallas Mavericks
Yet another reason to wonder if Mark Cuban really is nuts. Forget the league fines totaling over $1 million, the running on the court, even the cool new reality show- -the owner of the Mavericks is looking crazy enough with just his personnel moves lately. So far this off-season Dallas has let star guard Steve Nash leave, missed out on key free agents, made some questionable draft choices, and now this. Sure, Walker takes more bad shots than a drunk at Happy Hour- -but he's still one of the NBA's most talented players. Terry is undersized and just as much of a headache in the locker room (Delk has almost as much talent), and Henderson is just another big body who can't stay healthy. The first-rounder might be a nice bonus for Dallas, but they need to win now and that's looking less likely as every summer day passes.
