MAVS TRADE FOR ANTHONY JOHNSON

The Indiana Pacers acquired guard Darrell Armstrong, forwards Josh Powell and Rawle Marshall from the Dallas Mavericks for guard Anthony Johnson.

What does it give the Indiana Pacers
Two athletic and underrated small forwards who might eventually compete for a starting job. Indy was hoping Peja Stojakovic would return but he bolted for the Hornets, so they still have a big hole to fill at small forward. Second-year forward Danny Granger might be their guy there but he's more of a power forward, and they still may add a top free agent. Powell and Marshall certainly give them depth at the position, and the two are also relatively inexpensive so this move doesn't affect the Pacers' salary cap flexibility. It's uncertain how much longer Armstrong will keep playing, since at 38 he doesn't seem to have too much left in the tank. If he does stick with Indy, it won't be in a significant role.

What does it give the Dallas Mavericks
A legitimate back-up guard who can be the third man in their backcourt rotation. Incumbent starters Jason Terry and Devin Harris are both capable of playing either the point or shooting guard, so they can shift over to the 2-spot when Johnson comes in. He gives them high-quality relief as a pass-first floor leader who can also hit the three with consistency. Armstrong once filled that role, but his age and injuries saw his playing time decrease dramatically the past few seasons. The fact that the deal is a sign-and-trade means the Mavs don't have to use more salary cap money on a free agent.
