KNICKS PICK UP PIVOT CHANDLER IN 3-TEAMER
In a three-team trade, New York Knicks traded center Ronny Turiaf, a 2013 second-round pick, and cash to the Washington Wizards; and traded point guard Andy Rautins to the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks traded center Tyson Chandler and the draft rig
What does it give the New York Knicks
Chandler is a perfect fit for the Knicks and the ideal addition for their fast-rising powerhouse: a highly mobile, high-flying center who's also excellent defensively. His arrival means Amar'e Stoudemire can play more at power forward (and won't have as heavy a burden on D) and gives the Knicks quite possibly the NBA's top frontcourt. Nivins and Printezis are throw-in types who currently toil in Europe, but both have size and talent and may eventually play for New York.
What does it give the Dallas Mavericks
This deal has to hurt a little for the defending NBA champs, but they didn't seem ready to do what it took to pay Chandler what New York will ($56 million over four years). This sign-and-trade at least lets Dallas get something for their former starting center, and opens up a spot for Brendan Haywood to become the new starter (unless they acquire a more stellar option). Rautins won't likely be much of a factor even if he somehow manages to stay on the Dallas roster.
What does it give the Washington Wizards
Washington does a nice job here of landing a quality defensive depth center (Turiaf) plus a draft pick and cash in return for another pick and simply helping this deal happen. Turiaf brings veteran toughness and leadership to a young Wiz team, which should help keep them moving forward.
