BOBS GET GORDON FOR MAGGETTE
The Charlotte Bobcats acquired shooting guard Ben Gordon and a conditional future first-round draft pick from the Detroit Pistons for forward Corey Maggette.
What does it give the Charlotte Hornets
This deal is a somewhat curious for Charlotte. While they add an above-average scorer to a team desperate for scoring, they also lose a quality scorer in Maggette while getting saddled with an extra year of a massive contract (since Gordon has one year more on his deal than Maggette). While Maggette didn't work out as hoped for the Bobs, it's hard to understand why Charlotte would add so much extra salary for a very good role player and a pick that probably won't be great (since it's protected). Regardless, Gordon may lead the team in scoring next season.
What does it give the Detroit Pistons
Assuming the Pistons decide to keep Maggette for the one season left on his contract, he likely becomes their sixth man (which can help both him and the team, considering his proneness to injury and Detroit's need for more points, especially in the frontcourt). Longer-term for Detroit this deal is about money. They free up roughly $14 million for 2013-14 by moving Gordon's contract (since his deal is a year longer than Maggette's). The future first-round pick is a bit pricey, but it's protected in several scenarios and the extra money gives the Pistons the ability to eventually sign a big free agent. Nice deal by Detroit.
