HARRIS HEADS TO HAWKS FOR MARVIN

The Atlanta Hawks acquired point guard Devin Harris from the Utah Jazz for forward Marvin Williams.

What does it give the Atlanta Hawks
With {P Joe Johnson} shipped out and {P Kirk Hinrich} not expected back, the Hawks need to replace their minutes and shots in the backcourt. Enter Harris, a player with stellar ability but a long history of inconsistency (especially from last season). Harris can step in and provide great sixth man play at either guard spot, and he is still one of the NBA's better starters when he's on his game. It's conceivable that he'll play some shooting guard for the Hawks, and if he doesn't work out the Hawks can trade him next season or let him go (since his contract will expire after the 2012-13 campaign).

What does it give the Utah Jazz
The Jazz have a lot of young talent but struggled to get steady excellence out of their wing positions last season. That isn't to say Williams will be the cure for that, but like the outgoing Harris he is a top talent who just doesn't always play that way. With a good training camp he might land the Jazz's starting small forward spot, with {P Gordon Hayward} possibly shifting to shooting guard now that {P Raja Bell} is gone. Williams can get out of his contract after next season, so this isn't a bad risk for Utah.
