JACK, WRIGHT HIGHLIGHT THREE-TEAM SWAP
In a three-team trade: The New Orleans Hornets traded point guard Jarrett Jack to the Golden State Warriors and center Darryl Watkins to the Philadelphia 76ers. Golden State traded small forward Dorell Wright to Philadelphia. Philadelphia traded the draft rights to forward Edin Bavcic to New Orleans.
What does it give the Golden State Warriors
{P Stephen Curry} is a rising star for Golden State but his ongoing ankle issues have caused a lot of concern for the team. Jack is an excellent veteran backup who can also start if Curry gets injured again or needs to take things slowly at any point in the season. Wright broke out for the Warriors in 2010-11 but fell back to earth last season, and became expendable when Golden State drafted {P Klay Thompson} last year and {P Harrison Barnes} this year.
What does it give the Philadelphia 76ers
This is a minor steal for the Sixers. They get a player with stellar tools in Wright (although his production dropped off significantly last season), and Watkins has the tools to battle for a depth job in the paint for them. Wright probably won't start for Philly, but he can provide great all-round play in stretches as well as great length and energy. This move probably means more time at power forward for {P Thaddeus Young}.
What does it give the New Orleans Pelicans
After a mostly dismal 2011-12 campaign the Hornets are trying to rebuild quickly, and they've added some very impressive young players this off-season in top draft pick {P Anthony Davis} and sweet-shooting power forward {P Ryan Anderson}. While Jack was arguably their best player last season, the Hornets do a nice job shedding his veteran salary here. For now, this opens up the starting point guard job for {P Greivis Vasquez}. Bavcic is a onetime top European prospect whose NBA future is far from certain.
