GREEN TO CLIPS FOR THE RIGHTS TO 'SOFO'

The Los Angeles Clippers acquired guard Willie Green from the Atlanta Hawks for center Sofoklis Schortsanitis and a trade exception.

What does it give the Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks have spent the summer trying to free up cap space and add prospects, and this deal is another example of that. New GM Danny Ferry has added a very promising center prospect here in Schortsanitis. Known in Greece as 'Sofo,' Schortsanitis is one of the top centers in Europe. He showed his potential with a huge performance at the 2006 World Championship, helping Greece upset Team USA. All that said, the Hawks will have to wait for Schortsanitis (assuming he ever heads to the NBA); he recently signed for three more years in Europe. The trade exception lets the Hawks trade for a player with Green's salary sometime over the next year.

What does it give the Los Angeles Clippers
Green isn't likely to play big minutes as part of the Clips' deep backcourt, but he's a solid veteran who can do a little of everything fairly well. He's solid insurance in case either of {P Chauncey Billups} or {P Jamal Crawford} gets injured, and with both those players also able to run the point, Green should be a fairly regular part of L.A.'s backcourt rotation.
