MAVS ADD SIZE & DEPTH WITH GREG SMITH
The Dallas Mavericks acquired center-power forward Greg Smith from the Chicago Bulls for the draft rights to combo forward Tadija Dragicevic.
What does it give the Dallas Mavericks
The underrated Smith has shown flashes of being a quality NBA post player, but he's struggled to find consistency as a pro. Still, he's very young (23) and has a chance to eventually be a steal if all goes well. Plus, the Mavs need a promising backup to play behind veterans {P Dirk Nowitzki} and {P Tyson Chandler} in the frontcourt. Smith is a pretty affordable risk, so this is a solid depth move by Big D.
What does it give the Chicago Bulls
Right now the Bulls are focused on clearing cap space to sign free agent superstar {P=413 Pau Gasol}. While moving Smith's contract won't help with that too much (his deal is for just under $1 million next season), this move at least helps a bit (and Smith wasn't a key player for Chicago, a team clearly set on contending this season). It's less clear if the Bulls intend to bring Dragicevic over from Europe, but even if they do he won't likely be a rotation regular.
Fantasy impact
Smith has some deep sleeper potential for down the road, and might be a solid fantasy add next season if Chandler gets injured. More than that, his addition to the Mavericks' roster likely limits the fantasy upside of fellow young backup post player {P Brandan Wright}. There is little to no fantasy impact on the Bulls side of this deal, since Dragicevic will only have fantasy value if he leaves Europe and makes the Bulls roster, and even if he does, don't expect the solid-scoring forward to be a key player for Chicago.
