LAKERS LAND VET POINT GUARD CALDERON

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired point guard Jose Calderon, a 2nd-round draft pick in 2018, and a 2nd-round draft pick in 2019 from the Chicago Bulls for the rights to power forward / center Ater Majok.

What does it give the Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are in full-on rebulding mode now that Kobe Bryant has retired, so Calderon will help their young guards learn how to play the right way. He's a highly efficient pro who knows what it takes to succeed, and gives L.A. a competitive fall-back player who can help shorten losing streaks. He'll likely be an especially positive influence on maturity-challenged cornerstone DeAngelo Russell.

What does it give the Chicago Bulls
The Bulls have overhauled much of their roster this off-season, and moving Calderon simply saves money. This trade gets his almost-$8 million salary off the books for the coming campaign (which is why Chicago also needed to send the draft picks, since L.A. is helping the Bulls financially in a big way here). Majok is an aging journeyman who looks unlikely to join the NBA anytime soon, so he seems to have been included so the Bulls actually receive something in this deal (a league requirement).

Fantasy impact
Calderon is a solid longtime starter in the NBA, so for the coming season he may eat into Russell's playing time at point guard. That said, his presence will probably help Russell improve in the longer term, so this helps Russell's value in keeper leagues. There is no fantasy fallout on the Bulls, since Rajon Rondo is entrenched as the likely big-minute starter.
