CAVS TRADE FOR SESSIONS

The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Ramon Sessions, Ryan Hollins and a 2013 second-round draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair.

What does it give the Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers lost a lot of assists when LeBron James chose Miami, and Sessions will replace some of them. One of the NBA's best pure passers and an underrated scorer, he also knows incumbent Cleveland point guard Mo Williams well from their days together in Milwaukee. Look for Sessions to back up Williams at the point and occasionally play alongside him (with Williams then shifting to shooting guard). Hollins is a solid backup center who should get some of the minutes left by the departure of Shaquille O'Neal via free agency. The draft pick helps offset the fact the Cavs are taking on more guaranteed salary than the T-Wolves here.

What does it give the Minnesota Timberwolves
Neither West nor Telfair is expected to remain with Minny after this trade, so overall this is appears to simply help the Timberwolves clear salary cap space (by moving the guaranteed contracts of Sessions and Hollins). The troubled West has a $4.6 Million salary for next season but it isn't guaranteed until Aug. 5, and he can be bought out before then for $500,000. Meanwhile Telfair has only one year left on his deal (for $2.7 Million) and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports he is expected to be either traded or bought out. Moreover, Minny had too many centers with Hollins on the roster, and earlier signed Luke Ridnour for depth at point guard (making Sessions expendable).
