CATS, NETS TRADE GUARDS
The Charlotte Bobcats acquired guard Jeff McInnis from the New Jersey Nets for guard/forward Bernard Robinson.
What does it give the Charlotte Hornets
A competent veteran point guard who can help the team win while they wait for Brevin Knight to heal up. Knight is out until possibly February nursing a groin injury, but even when he was healthy the Bobs needed some depth at the guard position. Young Raymond Felton is the only other pure point guard on the squad. This move is a risk for the Bobs chemistry-wise, because despite his talent McInnis is known as a free spirit who has had a hard time fitting in on several NBA teams. The fact McInnis lives in the area and played his college ball at nearby North Carolina may help him feel more at home with the Bobs and help him focus.
What does it give the New Jersey Nets
A way to get McInnis and his $3.6 Million salary off the books. As he did in Cleveland, McInnis played his way out of favor in New Jersey and the Nets weren't allowing him to be part of the team this season despite having him under contract. Robinson isn't a bad return for McInnis straight up, since he's much younger and still has some untapped talent and upside. What the Nets really need is a dependable big-man, even moreso now that Nenad Krstic is out for the season. They may still acquire one, considering the underwhelming Jason Collins is their most established paint presence.
