VINCE CARTER TO ORLANDO
The Orlando Magic acquired guard/forward Vince Carter and forward Ryan Anderson from the New Jersey Nets for guard Rafer Alston, center/forward Tony Battie and guard Courtney Lee.
What does it give the Orlando Magic
During their impressive run to the NBA Finals this year, the Magic had an above-average player at every position except shooting guard. They also lacked an established veteran go-to player, so bringing in longtime superstar 2-guard Vince Carter fills both of those needes exceptionally well. His tendency in recent seasons to take more perimeter shots also fits well with the Magic's three-happy offense, so this is a great move all-round for Orlando. Getting the underrated Anderson is also a coup, and he might take the place of impending free agent Hedo Turkoglu in the lineup.
What does it give the New Jersey Nets
The Nets are slowly rebuilding with youth and Carter was their resident veteran All-Star, so it was only a matter of time before they had to move his huge contract for the future. Doing so here will give the Nets huge financial flexibility soon; the Newark Star-Ledger reports the team will free up $17.5 Million in 2010-11 as a result, a number that makes them a big player for the heavily-anticipated free agent class of 2010 (which might include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and other superstars). Alston has just one year left on his contract and can help rising star Devin Harris run the point, whlie Battie has only one year remaining on his deal as well. Lee is a good (but not great) talent who will help fill the void left by Carter.
