BIG DOG MOVES TO NEW ORLEANS

The New Orleans Hornets acquired forward Glenn Robinson from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for forwards Jamal Mashburn and Rodney Rogers.

What does it give the New Orleans Pelicans
$12 Million of salary cap space for the summer and the end of a long-term headache. Whether Robinson can or can't play doesn't matter to 'Nawlins, who unload two veteran contracts while they rebuild and free up space for a top young free agent in the off-season. Their moves are similar to those taken last season by the Atlanta Hawks, who cut as much veteran salary as they could then drafted well and picked up key free agents. Mashburn was a great player when he was healthy, but that wasn't often enough for the Hornets, who don't believe he'll ever play again.

What does it give the Philadelphia 76ers
In Rogers, a quality veteran bench player for their title run. Shortly after coaxing Chris Webber from the Kings, Philly now has a one-time Sixth Man of the Year who can bring energy, experience, and shooting range. Rogers will likely come off the bench for the Sixers, taking the pressure off youngsters such as Willie Green and Kyle Korver. In taking on Rogers' $2.7 Million deal and 20 percent of Mashburn's salary for next season (the other 80 is paid by insurance), the Sixers won't have to pay too steep a price for dumping Robinson's massive $12 Million for the rest of the year.
