WOLVES LAND BOOTH, CARNEY
The Minnesota Timberwolves acquired center Calvin Booth, forward Rodney Carney, cash considerations and a conditional first-round draft pick from the Philadelphia 76ers for a second-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the Minnesota Timberwolves
Thanks to the benefit of a $2.8 million trade exception acquired from Miami last year, the T-Wolves were able to take advantage of Philadelphia's need to clear cap room. At the very least, they improve position in a future draft (the pick they acquired belongs to Utah originally). Carney is a capable young swingman who should be ready to join the young ranks in Minnesota, alongside Kevin Love, Al Jefferson, Randy Foye, et al., while it appears as though Booth may never actually wear a Minnesota uniform.
What does it give the Philadelphia 76ers
Welcome to the wacky financial world of the NBA. The Sixers gift-wrap a couple players, a draft pick and money to Minnesota, just to open up a little salary cap room? What this trade really gives Philly is all-star Elton Brand, who signed with the team after the deal allowed them to improve their contract offer. As long as they can also hold onto restricted free-agent Andre Iguodala, suddenly they join the ranks of the Eastern Conference elite.
