LIONS BOOST SECONDARY WITH CORNERBACK BANKS
The Detroit Lions acquired cornerback Johnthan Banks from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Detroit Lions
This is a bit of a steal for Detroit. Banks has shown he can produce as an NFL starter, and he's reuinted here with Cornerbacks coach Tony Oden. Banks played for Oden in his rookie season in Tampa Bay, and he performed alongside new Lions secondary mate Darius Slay at Mississippi State. Essentially Banks gives his new squad some needed depth, plus the ability to line up against bigger receivers and threaten for some pickoffs. It won't be surprising if Banks pushes for a starting job soon.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Banks fell out of the Buccaneers' regular rotation this season after serving as a starter for much of his first three NFL campaigns, so Tampa Bay is simply moving on here. The draft pick isn't commensurate with Banks' talent level, but the Bucs do save some salary here by trading him.
Fantasy impact
It's unlikely Banks will provide much fantasy value as an Individual Defensive Player option in fantasy leagues featuring them (at least for the rest of this season), because he doesn't yet know the Detroit playbook and he's not guaranteed a starting job. There is no fantasy fallout on the Tampa Bay side of the swap.
