TEXANS DUMP OSWEILER TO THE BROWNS

The Cleveland Browns acquired quarterback Brock Osweiler, a second-round draft pick in 2018 and a sixth-round draft pick in 2017 from the Houston Texans for a fourth-round draft pick in 2017.

What does it give the Cleveland Browns
Cleveland has plenty of salary cap space and are in the midst of a massive roster overhaul, so this trade makes sense for them. The Browns have been stockpiling draft picks for some time now, and will eventually see the fruits of their labor. Osweiler may or may not be given an opportunity to start in Cleveland, and he could be released or traded again. Therefore, the key for Cleveland here was to add two more draft picks for the future.

What does it give the Houston Texans
The key word here is 'dump', because that is obviously what the Texans decided to do in order to (eventually) upgrade their quarterback position. Osweiler struggled badly as a starter in Houston in 2016, and the club decided they were already ready to part ways. Houston got back a fourth rounder in this year's draft, plus plenty of salary cap space that they'll use to upgrade the quarterback position. For now, Tom Savage is the starter.

Fantasy impact
Osweiler's fantasy stock has plummetted like a skydiver sans a parachute, and there are no guarantees he will even play a snap for Cleveland. He is likely to be a backup QB somewhere in 2017. Savage's long-range fantasy value gets a definite boost after this deal, but he is not expected to lead Houston's offense next season. Cody Kessler remains an option to start with the Browns, with or without Osweiler in the fold.
