DALLAS DEALS FOR LINEBACKER ELLIOTT
The Dallas Cowboys acquired outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott from the Green Bay Packers for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Dallas Cowboys
Elliott is an athletic pass rusher with a knack for forcefully getting to the quarterback, so the Cowboys likely want to see how he does as a situational edge rusher. He hasn't shown a lot of all-round starter abillity in his NFL career so far, but his pass rushing tool is impressive. Look for him to get a look in blitz and pass-rush packages.
What does it give the Green Bay Packers
The Packers clearly didn't love what they were seeing from Elliott this off-season as a key backup outside linebacker, and that probably contributed to the team signing veteran Ahmad Brooks and claiming Chris Odom from Atlanta. Those two moves made Elliott--who's not as well-rounded as the newcomers, particularly in the run-stopping department--expendable, and Green Bay gets a draft pick here in return.
Fantasy impact
Elliott has the raw talent to possibly eventually make some noise as a source of sacks, but for now he looks like a depth / situational option for Dallas. In fantasy formats featuring Individual Fantasy Players, keep him on the deep sleeper radar (but don't draft him).
