NINERS MOVE MAYS TO THE BENGALS

The Cincinnati Bengals acquired safety Taylor Mays from the San Francisco 49ers for an undisclosed future draft pick.

What does it give the Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals have a long history of adding talented but flawed players, and Mays certainly fits that profile. A gifted athlete with ideal size and speed for the pro game, he nonetheless struggled significantly as a 2010 rookie in adjusting to NFL coverage packages. His aggressive college style just hasn't served him well yet, so Mays needs to make the adjustments necessary to succeed as a pro. He joins vets Reggie Nelson, Chris Crocker, and Gibril Wilson in the safety corps, so don't expect big things from Mays as a Bengal just yet.

What does it give the San Francisco 49ers
San Fran added Donte Whitner to their secondary this off-season, so they could afford to cut ties with Mays (who simply wasn't panning out for them after getting picked in the second round of last year's draft). Obviously San Fran doesn't get much here for a talented prospect, but they do save some salary and the pick may eventually yield a useful depth player.
