JAGS SNAG BACKUP QB MCCOWN FROM BUCS

The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired quarterback Luke McCown from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed 2010 draft pick.

What does it give the Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jags have a very solid starting quarterback in David Garrard but don't have a lot of proven options behind him, with Todd Bouman (who is aging and still unproven) and Zach Miller (a rookie), his backups. McCown is a quality arm and might have some success if called upon.

What does it give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs named Byron Leftwich the team's starter this summer after a QB battle with McCown, and with talented rookie Josh Freeman waiting in the wings (and showing some readiness already), moving McCown made sense for both team unity and for monetary reasons. The move also gives McCown a better chance to play elsewhere, while allowing the Bucs to hold onto young backup Josh Johnson (who will be No.3 in the pecking order).
