COLTS ADD BACKUP QB STANTON
The Indianapolis Colts acquired quarterback Drew Stanton and a seventh-round draft pick in 2012 from the New York Jets for a sixth-round draft pick in 2012.
What does it give the Indianapolis Colts
The Colts will have a new starting QB in 2012, either Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III via the draft, but they will also have a new backup in Stanton. The latter wanted out of New York immediately, following the acquisition of Tim Tebow by the Jets from Denver. Stanton is a serviceable backup, but the Colts plan on giving their rookie signal-caller all of the playing time in Year 1 of the post-Peyton Manning era. Therefore, Stanton shouldn't be a factor.
What does it give the New York Jets
After the Jets landed Tebow in a controversial move, Stanton immediately wanted out. After all, he signed on with 'Gang Green' to serve as Mark Sanchez' backup--a role now belonging to Tebow. Tebow will push Sanchez for the starting gig a lot more than Stanton, who clearly was a fallback option all along. Therefore, the Jets did well to get back a sixth rounder that they sent in the Tebow deal with Denver.
