ARCHULETA SENT TO CHICAGO

The Chicago Bears acquired free safety Adam Archuleta from the Washington Redskins for a sixth-round draft pick in 2007.

What does it give the Chicago Bears
Another proven defender who is a nice fit, one who can help shore up a talented but young secondary. Archuleta is a veteran playmaker who is as intense and focused in coverage as they come, and he's a perfect fit for the Bears' aggressive defense. It's a bit of a head-scratcher money-wise (since Chicago has been trying to economize lately) but the Bears aren't sure that Mike Brown will be back from a Lisfranc injury to start the 2007 season. A solid move by the Bears, as a rich defense gets richer.

What does it give the Washington Commanders
A way to get out of paying all of the fat contract they gave Archuleta last year. Archuleta had a forgettable campaign with Washington, as their entire defense took a massive step backward and fell flat as a group. The pick is a passable consolation prize for an investment that just didn't work out for Washington. It won't likely yield a player as talented the one they give up here, but at least they are making a move to cut costs.
