PANTHERS NAB OLSEN
The Carolina Panthers acquired tight end Greg Olsen from the Chicago Bears for an undisclosed draft pick.
What does it give the Carolina Panthers
Expect Olsen to become a key target right away for his new team. With their top two quarterbacks (Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen) both young and inexperienced, the Panthers are likely to look for a lot of safe outlet passes to their tight ends (and Olsen can play in two-tight-end sets with either Jeremy Shockey or Gary Barnidge). A nice pickup.
What does it give the Chicago Bears
All the Bears essentially do here is cut salary, but Olsen wasn't producing as expected. Olsen didn't prove a good fit for Bears' offensive coordinator Mike Martz's deep-play offense (as his 9.9 yards per catch attest). Look for massive, athletic fourth-year tight end Kellen Davis to see a boost in looks going forward.
