DROUGHNS TO GIANTS

The New York Giants acquired running back Reuben Droughns from the Cleveland Browns for wide receiver Tim Carter.

What does it give the New York Giants
An above-average tailback who has shown he can be successful if healthy and focused. Droughns is not Tiki Barber, but he's a very serviceable runner who has demonstrated he can usually carry the load when called upon. His arrival in New York is obviously a depth hedge on young Brandon Jacobs, who has the talent to be a star but isn't experienced as a No. 1 back. Look for the two to platoon for awhile until one of them falters. Droughns had a very disappointing 2006 in Cleveland, but this might be a wake-up call for him.

What does it give the Cleveland Browns
A way to get rid of Droughns' fat contract. With Jamal Lewis now in Cleveland, the Browns have a new No. 1 back and obviously didnÙt want to pay two big salaries for one position. They overpaid to keep Droughns last year and he promptly went into the tank, but they erase that financial miscue here. Carter has raw talent but it's still raw at age 27, so this obviously wasn't a move based on pure personnel. Carter might help Cleveland out on special teams and be a situational deep threat in the passing game, but this move seems to be mostly about the money.
