JETS TRADE UP ON DRAFT DAY
The New York Jets acquired the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft from the Cleveland Browns for defensive end Kenyon Coleman, quarterback Brett Ratliff, safety Abram Elam, the 17th and 52nd overall picks in the 2009 draft.
What does it give the New York Jets
Looking for a quarterback since Brett Favre announced his retirement, the Jets pulled a bold move here in trading up to draft Mark Sanchez. Whether they selected the best player in the draft or fell victim to Sanchez's surging hype will likely take years to determine, but in the short term they've become a stronger team: the USC product should be in the running for the starter's job right out of training camp.
What does it give the Cleveland Browns
A good move from the Browns, who have plenty of holes to fill and thus chose to take advantage of this draft's considerable early-round depth. In addition to the pair of draft picks, Eric Mangini continues to target his former players; both Elam and Coleman figure to be immediate contributors to a defense badly in need of an overhaul, and Brett Ratliff makes for an interesting third option behind Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, especially given Cleveland's QB troubles at the end of 2008.
