VONTAE DAVIS TO THE COLTS
The Indianapolis Colts acquired cornerback Vontae Davis from the Miami Dolphins for a second-round draft pick in 2013 and a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2013.
What does it give the Indianapolis Colts
The Colts were desperately looking for help in the secondary (they need help for their entire defense, actually) and in Davis, a former first round pick in 2009, they found a decent option at cornerback who should start right away for them. Though he reported to the Dolphins’ camp out of shape earlier this summer, he remains an asset due to his athleticism, speed and solid overall skills as a cover man and certainly fills a big void in Indy. This move comes less than a week after the acquisition of another corner ({p Josh Gordy} from the Rams) so the Colts may feel they're now pretty much set at the position. Though he still has a lot to prove, Davis is a very nice gamble by the Colts here and he came at a very reasonable price.
What does it give the Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins had clearly given up on Davis (with {P Richard Marshall} signed they even didn’t intend to start Davis this season--mainly because of his physical condition) so the second-round pick as well as a conditional late-round pick in 2013 are a fair compensation for a player that wasn’t in the team’s plans anymore.
Fantasy impact
Davis didn’t record impressive numbers during his three years in Miami but the move to the re-building Colts will likely have a positive impact on his career. Expect those numbers to rise as the Indy defense will likely spend a lot of time on the field this season.
