BROWNS MOVE QB MCCOY TO NINERS
The San Francisco 49ers acquired quarterback Colt McCoy and a sixth-round draft pick in 2013 from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round pick in 2013 and a seventh-round pick in 2013.
What does it give the San Francisco 49ers
The Niners made a bold move last season in handing the reins to athletic QB {P Colin Kaepernick}, but the cost ultimately was giving up quality veteran passer {P=7779 Alex Smith}. McCoy is a solid (if much less proven) replacement for Smith as Kaepernick's potential backup, assuming he beats out {P Scott Tolzien} as the primary understudy. San Fran has more than enough picks heading into this year's draft, so giving up two late ones (and getting one in return) won't likely change their draft fortunes much.
What does it give the Cleveland Browns
This off-season the Browns picked up quality vet {P Jason Campbell} as insurance in case starter {P Brandon Weeden} struggles in 2013, so McCoy was expendable. This deal lets the Browns move on from McCoy, who lost his starting gig when Weeden was drafted last season to be the team's cornerstone quarterback. The draft pick return isn't great here for Cleveland (especially since they used a third-rounder back in 2010 to draft McCoy) but at least they free up some money by not having to pay him going forward.
Fantasy impact
The only player whose fantasy fortunes are affected by this deal is Tolzien, who had a shot at being relevant in 2013 if Kaepernick got injured. Now Tolzien will have to outplay McCoy for a chance to be a regular backup. Weeden and Campbell were already set in stone for the Browns.
