GIANTS ADD VETERAN LB BEASON

The New York Giants acquired linebacker Jon Beason from the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed draft pick in 2014.

What does it give the New York Giants
The Giants are in tatters defensively, so they're desperate to add bodies to help remedy the situation. Beason's best position is middle linebacker, but {P Luke Kuechly}'s arrival in 2012--plus Beason's own struggles with injury--largely rendered the latter expendable in Carolina. With the Giants, he could take over for middling MLB {P Mark Herzlich}, who has not played well so far this season.

What does it give the Carolina Panthers
No matter what draft pick acquired here by the Panthers, this is a no-brainer move for them. Former Giant {P Chase Blackburn} had taken over as the starter at weak-side linebacker anyway and, like Beason, can fill in for Kuechly in the middle if required. Therefore, the Panthers did well here to ship out Beason and his diminishing returns. The latter will probably never be the same player again.

Fantasy impact
Beason's fantasy value could get a boost if he returns to playing middle linebacker with the Giants, but his injury situation is still quite murky. Blackburn's value goes up a little with Beason gone, though he's not a major playmaker. The struggling Herzlich is the clear loser in this transaction.
