SAN FRAN GETS GABBERT FOR LATE-ROUND PICK

The San Francisco 49ers acquired quarterback Blaine Gabbert from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round draft pick in 2014.

What does it give the San Francisco 49ers
This is an interesting move by the 49ers, who already have rising star {P Colin Kaepernick} at the helm of their offense. This trade should not in any way be seen as a threat to Kaepernick's status as the clear-cut No. 1, but Gabbert does at least give the 49ers an intriguing and talented (albeit underachieving) option as their top understudy. It's a bit odd, since many NFL backup quarterbacks tend to be veterans; but it's hard to suggest Gabbert doesn't have the talent to be a backup. Maybe the move and the lesser role will help him improve.

What does it give the Jacksonville Jaguars
This isn't a surprise at all in Jacksonville, since the Jags recently re-signed QB {P Chad Henne} and made it fairly clear publicly he's entrenched as the team's starter under center. The Jags are probably just happy to save some money and be moving on without a quarterback controversy to deal with, although it has to hurt to get so little back for a player who was not long ago expected to be a franchise cornerstone (and one who was selected in the first round in '11 at No. 10 overall).

Fantasy impact
This trade doesn't affect any fantasy-relevant players at all, except in super-deep keeper leagues where some might have held onto Gabbert hoping he would turn things around. His value is probably about the same in San Fran as it was in Jacksonville (that is, minimal; he's on a much better team now, but has no chance at starting unless Kaepernick gets injured).
