FAVRE HEADS TO JETS

The New York Jets acquired quarterback Brett Favre from the Green Bay Packers for a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the New York Jets
In terms of appearances, this move seems to make a lot of sense; yet in terms of pure football needs, it's a bit of a head-scratcher. The Jets obviously wanted to quell the ongoing Chad Pennington-Kellen Clemens QB controversy, while appearing to fans that they're getting back on track after last year's face-plant. They meet both those objectives with this deal; but last year they were a run-first team, and that makes Favre an odd fit since he's used to throwing a lot. Clemens now becomes the understudy, and while that issue is cleared up it will be tough for Favre to be an instant savior for an offense that has a lot of problems and actually had a very good QB last season in the underrated Pennington (whose completion percentage in 2007 was second only to Tom Brady's).

What does it give the Green Bay Packers
The draft pick reportedly increases in round depending on how busy and successful Favre is this season. That said, the pick wasn't really the thing for the Packers here; above all, they simply wanted to end the controversy and distraction that his coming out of retirement caused. Favre was a Pro Bowler last season, so he's not washed up by any means; but the Pack had moved on and obviously felt the need to stay loyal to replacement Aaron Rodgers, who had waited three years for his shot at starting. The deal also gets Favre out of the NFC (which was a key point for Green Bay management), and while Rodgers will be hard pressed to match Favre's production, he will at least have the assurance that the team is behind him going forward.
