LIONS ADD VETERAN NORTHCUTT

The Detroit Lions acquired wide receiver Dennis Northcutt from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for safety Gerald Alexander.

What does it give the Detroit Lions
Northcutt showed down the stretch last season he has the goods to be an above-average NFL wideout. In his only two starts of 2008 he averaged 114 receiving yards and scored in both, and his speed and veteran presence will help take pressure of rising young No.1 wideout Calvin Johnson. Northcutt will probably compete with Bryant Johnson for the No.2 spot.

What does it give the Jacksonville Jaguars
The off-season signing of star veteran wideout Torry Holt bumped the underrated Northcutt to the No.2 slot in Jacksonville, and with young Mike Walker and three solid rookies around in Mike Thomas, Jarret Dillard, and Tiquan Underwood, the Jags obviously feel they have enough depth at the position without Northcutt. In Alexander they get a solid safety for their secondary mix who started all 16 games as a rookie in 2007, but was limited to just five games (one start) last season by a neck injury.
