As prospects such as Alexander Steen and Kyle Wellwood get a chance to make the big club, the Leafs needed eventual replacements at the AHL level. That's where a player of Pohl's ability comes in. He's mainly a depth player.
What does it give the St. Louis Blues
The Blues finally gave up on Pohl, after years of promise in the farm system. He wasn't a building block for the future, so the club did well to land a future asset. It also frees up more space for their new AHL affiliate in Peoria.
