BOGUNIECKI FOR POAPST

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired winger Eric Boguniecki from the St. Louis Blues for defenseman Steve Poapst.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins need to shake things up in a big way because the chemistry on this roster is all wrong. Therefore, the first move was to bring in Boguniecki, a solid third-line winger who should help immediately. While the Pens are still a woeful defensive team, Poapst won't be missed. In fact, losing Poapst will either give Ric Jackman a reprieve with coach Eddie Olczyk, or perhaps give promising AHLer Noah Welch a spot on the big-league roster.

What does it give the St. Louis Blues
With long-term injuries to both Eric Brewer and Christian Backman, the Blues needed a little defensive depth. And that's what they'll get in Poapst. However, the Blues are going nowhere fast so a 36-year-old defenseman is not what GM Larry Pleau should be acquiring right now. Instead, he should be calling up a prospect from Peoria (AHL). As for Boguniecki, his departure should ensure more playing time for rookie Lee Stempniak.
