RIVET TO BUFFALO
The Buffalo Sabres acquired defenseman Craig Rivet and a seventh-round draft pick in 2010 from the San Jose Sharks for a second-round draft pick in 2009 and a second-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the Buffalo Sabres
In Rivet, the Sabres added a veteran, physical blueliner with leadership qualities that they badly needed. He's also a right-handed shooter, which was also missing from Buffalo's blueline brigade. He should make an impact with the Sabres, since he spent most of his career in the Northeast Division with the Montreal Canadiens.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are overhauling their blueline, and apparently needed to create salary cap space in order to move forward. San Jose must get restricted free agent Christian Ehrhoff signed, and this move will help towards that end. Rivet will be replaced by veteran right-handed rearguards Rob Blake and Dan Boyle.
