DEVILS LAND SKOULA

The New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Martin Skoula from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a fifth-round draft pick in 2010.

What does it give the New Jersey Devils
Skoula should add depth to the Devils blue-line. More importantly, he is familiar with coach Jacques Lemaire's system from their days together in Minnesota, so the transition should be a smooth one. The Devils are a little concerned about Paul Martin's injury situation, so they were expected to add another defenseman all along.

What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs never had any intention of keeping Skoula, and his small salary-cap hit made him far more attractive than Jeff Finger. So, GM Brian Burke did well to add a fifth rounder here, especially since Skoula was only added to the Ponikarovsky/Caputi trade for salary-cap purposes.
