STEMPNIAK TO PHOENIX
The Phoenix Coyotes acquired winger Lee Stempniak from the Toronto Maple Leafs for defenseman Matt Jones, a fourth-round draft pick in 2010 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
Stempniak is an average scoring winger who might fit in capably as a top-six guy for the Coyotes. He's also been used in defensive situations on a spotty Toronto team, so he may be able to help out there in Phoenix as well. If he doesn't pan out, the Coyotes can move on after this season (as his contract is expiring).
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto GM Brian Burke continues to rid his team of the leftovers from the former regime, while adding future-based resources for his ongoing rebuilding project. Stempniak is set for unrestricted free agency this off-season so the Leafs also save some cash here for the rest of the season, while getting three potential assets for a guy who would not have re-signed.
