RANGERS ADD JOHN MITCHELL
The New York Rangers acquired forward John Mitchell from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a seventh-round pick in 2012 draft.
What does it give the New York Rangers
Currently in the minors, Mitchell has shown (when up at the NHL level over the past few seasons) that he can be a useful--if not stellar--lower-line forward. He can supply the Rangers with some special-teams value (mostly on the penalty kill) and a certain amount of depth and versatility if he's summoned to the big club. His salary is very affordable, so this is a low-risk pickup for New York.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs are clearly in salary-cutting mode and they decided earlier this season Mitchell wasn't even in their short-term plans. He was also one of the few players left over from the pre-Brian Burke regime in Toronto, so seeing him moved here is no surprise. The seventh-rounder in return isn't exactly a prime building block, but Burke at least adds an asset while cutting a little salary.
