LEDDY LANDS IN DETROIT
The Detroit Red Wings acquired defenseman Nick Leddy from the New York Islanders for winger Richard Panik and a second-round draft pick in 2021.
What does it give the Detroit Red Wings
In Leddy, the Red Wings add a solid puck-moving defenseman with the ability to produce points and work the power play. He is 30 years old with a Stanley Cup ring (Chicago) in 11 seasons. He should bring invaluable experience to the youthful Red Wings.
What does it give the New York Islanders
The key to the deal for the Islanders here is moving Leddy before the expansion draft. They did not want to lose him for nothing, plus they also created significant cap space with this deal. Panik may or may not be a regular contributor for the Isles in 2021-22.
Fantasy impact
Leddy could see even more time on the power play as a Red Wing, and he might average even more minutes overall. He will suffer defensively moving away from Long Island, however. As for Panik, he will be a role player as an Islander. So, he should lose a lot of fantasy value barring another move.
