CARTER TO CAROLINA

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired winger Anson Carter from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a fifth-round draft pick in 2008.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes have been hit hard with injuries up front this season, with the latest being wingers Erik Cole and Cory Stillman. Therefore, Carter should help with the team's scoring depth. He's having a lousy year, but could turn things around with the defending champions. At this point, 'Canes GM Jim Rutherford had nothing to lose and everything to gain in making this deal at this time.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
Obviously, the Blue Jackets weren't the right fit for Carter. And things weren't getting any better for him under new coach Ken Hitchcock, which is probably why his trade value plummetted. The Jackets will now use his roster spot to try out a few youngsters who may play with the big club next season. Adding a fifth rounder is good, but perhaps GM Doug MacLean couldn't have held out for more.
