TOFFOLI TRADED TO CALGARY
The Calgary Flames acquired winger Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens for wingers Emil Heineman and Tyler Pitlick, a conditional first-round draft pick in 2022 and a fifth-round draft pick in 2023.
What does it give the Calgary Flames
In Toffoli, the Flames land a quality veteran scoring winger with championship pedigree. In fact, he reunites with head coach Darryl Sutter, his bench boss in Los Angeles when Toffoli won the Stanley Cup (2013-14). The Flames lack right-handed forwards, so Toffoli should fit in nicely. Expect him to see plenty of time on the power play. Toffoli has two seasons left on his contract ($4.25 million cap hit).
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
For the last-place Canadiens, dealing veterans seems like a foregone conclusion between now and this year's trade deadline. Toffoli fetched Montreal a decent return (a first-rounder this year unless it lands in the top 10, which is unlikely, plus winger prospect Heineman and a future fifth-rounder). Pitlick was a throw-in. New Habs management has already made two trades, so expect more to come.
Fantasy impact
Toffoli's fantasy value should see a little spike after the move to Calgary, especially because he already knows the system under Sutter. Heineman remains a decent winger prospect for the future, though he does not need to be picked up in keeper formats just yet. Pitlick has no fantasy value.
