The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Brett Kulak from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman William Lagesson, a conditional second-round draft pick in 2022 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2024.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers have used a number of young defensemen this season due to injury, so adding a quality depth defenseman like Kulak makes sense at this time. He should play on the third pairing down the stretch for an Edmonton team with playoff aspirations.

What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
Getting back a second-rounder and a seventh-rounder is good asset management. Adding a serviceable defenseman in Lagesson is great asset management by Montreal. Kulak was a popular player in Montreal but he was also a pending UFA.

Fantasy impact
The Oilers will likely use Kulak on the third pairing, so he is not a defenseman that will make an impact. Lagesson is mostly a defender, but keep an eye on his usage with Montreal.
