LUNDKVIST LEAVES NEW YORK FOR DALLAS

The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Nils Lundkvist from the New York Rangers for a conditional first-round draft pick in 2023 and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2025.

What does it give the Dallas Stars
In Lundkvist, the Stars acquire an offensive defenseman with a skill set that is similar to veteran John Klingberg (who left Dallas as an unrestricted free agent this summer). Lundkvist will probably compete for playing time with Colin Miller, Thomas Harley and Will Butcher. If he makes the roster, Lundkvist is likely to see time on the power play.

What does it give the New York Rangers
With Adam Fox, Jacob Trouba and Braden Schneider firmly entrenched on the right side of New York's blueline, the Rangers could afford to move on from Lundkvist at this time (despite the latter's immense offensive upside). The first rounder will become a '24 first if the Stars are a bottom-10 team in 2022-23. This is a very good trade for both squads.

Fantasy impact
Lundkvist's arrival makes things interesting in Big D. Miro Heiskanen should remain an excellent fantasy rearguard, but Lundkvist has a chance to supplant Ryan Suter, Esa Lindell, Miller and Harley in terms of point production (and fantasy points). However, he comes with some risk and must first prove he can win a job out of training camp with his new organization.
