MONAHAN MOVED TO WINNIPEG
The Winnipeg Jets acquired forward Sean Monahan from the Montreal Canadiens for a first-round draft pick in 2024 and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2027.
What does it give the Winnipeg Jets
In Monahan, the Jets are adding a solid center (who can also play wing if need be) for their playoff push. One of the best teams in the NHL this season, Winnipeg seems ready to compete with the best of the best in the Western Conference. Look for Monahan to become the team's second-line center behind Mark Scheifele, though he may slide down to line 3 behind Adam Lowry. Monahan's arrival gives coach Rick Bowness options.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens decided to maximize the asset here and swapped Monahan for two draft picks. Monahan was very good for Montreal, so he will be missed in the lineup. That said, GM Kent Hughes got a lot for Monahan (both when he originally acquired him, and now). He must now find a center to help curb the loss of Monahan from the current lineup. Could Monahan return to Montreal this summer? Stay tuned!
Fantasy impact
Monahan's ice time and usage will probably be reduced in Winnipeg, so this might be a good time to sell high on Monahan in many fantasy leagues.
