ALLEN ADDED BY NEW JERSEY
The New Jersey Devils acquired goaltender Jake Allen from the Montreal Canadiens for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2025.
What does it give the New Jersey Devils
This is a curious move by the Devils because Allen has struggled mightily this season. Furthermore, New Jersey needs a starting goaltender (Allen is more of a quality backup or platoon goalkeeper) and Allen is signed through 2024-25.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
Montreal retained 50 percent of Allen's salary in this deal, but at least they can now move forward with Sam Montembeault and Cayden Primeau as their two netminders. This is yet another great move by Habs general manager Kent Hughes.
Fantasy impact
Allen should play more now that he is with New Jersey, but buyer beware here. The Devils struggle defensively, so Allen needs to prove he can handle the workload. He should be better in New Jersey than he was with Montreal this season, but is that enough? Pass.
