DUCKS DEAL FOWLER TO BLUES

The St. Louis Blues acquired defenseman Cam Fowler and a fourth-round draft pick in 2027 from the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Jeremie Biakabutuka and a second-round draft pick in 2027.

What does it give the St. Louis Blues
In Fowler, the Blues pick up a veteran puck-moving defenseman. The 33-year-old has struggled uncharacteristically this season, managing only four assists in 17 games prior to this trade. He also missed some time with an injury. That all said, the long-time Duck should help strengthen the defensive corps of the Blues, as they try to remain in the playoff hunt in the tough Central Division (and Western Conference). He should step into a top-four role right away and will likely see time on the power play, as well. St. Louis is buying low on Fowler here.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
It's the end of an era in Anaheim. Fowler, a first-round pick in 2010, is on the move just days after the Ducks traded for Jacob Trouba. They also have several young offensive defenseman, which made Fowler expendable. Unfortunately, Anaheim got very little in return for him, given his $6.5 million cap hit this season and next. Biakabutuka is a 22-year-old defender who has been playing in the ECHL. In the draft pick swap, the Ducks were at least able to move up two rounds. But this trade is a disappointing end to Fowler's time with the franchise.

Fantasy impact
Fowler gets an immediate boost from this trade. The Blues' power play has struggled this season, so he may get a look there in the near future. His days as a reliable fantasy defenseman may be behind him, but this fresh start could make Fowler worth another look in most formats. As for Biakabutuka, he is a long shot to reach the NHL.
