CANADIENS GET CARRIER FOR BARRON
The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Alexandre Carrier from the Nashville Predators for defenseman Justin Barron.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
In Carrier, the Canadiens add a solid all-around defender who should become part of the team's blueline core for years to come (when he returns from injury). His arrival may lead to the team (finally) parting ways with veteran blueliner David Savard, who is a pending UFA and a much sought-after commodity.
What does it give the Nashville Predators
Barron has more offensive upside than Carrier, which is probably the appeal for Nashville here. He is also healthy, so he should immediately be inserted into the lineup to help a Predators squad that is trying to get back into the playoff mix. Defensively, Barron still has a lot of work to do.
Fantasy impact
Barron could be worth a speculative pickup in many league formats, but his power-play usage may not be any better in Nashville (behind Roman Josi and Brady Skjei). As for Carrier, his value is only in leagues that utilize hits and blocked shots as important stat categories. Also, his current injury situation is concerning. Pass on Carrier, for now.
